You can now book your train tickets on Skyscanner

Travel search engine Skyscanner are now allowing travellers to compare train fare prices, as well as air fares.

The Edinburgh-founded company, who were acquired by Chinese firm Ctrip for £1.4 billion, has enabled users of their iOS app to compare train prices in a similar fashion to websites Trainline.com and redspottedhanky.com.

The ability to compare train fares will also be available to users of Android devices shortly.

No booking fees and easy to use

Though Skyscanner isn't the first travel search engine to compare train prices, they are the first major competitor to offer the service without a booking fee.

A booking fee on Trainline currently comes in at £1.50, while on Redspottedhanky the fee is slightly less at £1.

As well as charging no booking fees, Skyscanner offers an easy to use service that won them a Lovie award for Best User Experience in 2017. There app also comes with a 24-hour customer service line to help you navigate any difficulties.

However, while flight prices are liberally regulated and highly competitive, there are stricter regulations on UK train fares and far fewer competitors, meaning Skyscanner may struggle to undercut rivals - other than shaving off the booking fee.

Whether, Skyscanner can perform on land as well as they don in the air remains to be seen.
