'People's champion' for Banburyshire wins disability award
A Banbury man who has spent two decades working for the community has won a major dyslexia award.
Community champion Andy Willis accepted the award for his work helping people living with the disability in Banburyshire.
Mr Willis was crowned winner of the Community Shining Star (20+) at last week’s national Dyslexia Awards 2026 held in Telford.
The prestigious award, sponsored by Bespoke Computing Ltd, celebrates extraordinary dyslexic individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact in their communities.

Andy Willis BCAv, known locally as the 'People’s Champion' was recognized for his 25-years' volunteering and charity work – 20 of which have been dedicated specifically to advice work.
As the founder, patron, and Head of Information, Advice and Wellbeing at the Banburyshire Advice Centre, he has provided life-changing poverty relief, guidance and support to vulnerable local individuals and families.
Speaking after the announcement, he said: "I am absolutely thrilled and deeply humbled to receive this award.
"To be recognized among such an inspiring group of finalists is a true honor. This trophy is a testament to the vital work we do at the Banburyshire Advice Centre and the resilience of our community.
"For 25 years, volunteering has been my passion and spending the last two decades focusing on crucial advice work has shown me just how much a dedicated support system matters.
"Being dyslexic has never stopped me from wanting to make a difference and I hope this inspires others to see that neurodiversity is a strength."
The Dyslexia Awards, celebrating their tenth year, celebrate the phenomenal achievements of neurodivergent individuals while actively breaking down stereotypes and overcoming the stigma associated with dyslexia.
