Andy Whing’s damning indictment proves just how in the doldrums Brackley Town are

Brackley Town are in the National League North relegation zone and the outlook will only worsen without a rapid shift in mentality.

Pressure is rapidly growing on manager Andy Whing following two heavy defeats in succession, with the Saints losing 3-0 at Morecambe just four days on from their 5-0 thumping at Buxton.

In a remark which has stunned many Brackley supporters, Whing admitted after the Morecambe loss that he didn’t see a way back into the game as soon as his side went 1-0 down.

Whing’s side held off Morecambe for the first 45 minutes but a goal from Elliot Newby into first-half stoppage time proved pivotal.

The team talk certainly didn’t work as intended as Brackley’s heads dropped and they conceded two more quickly after the break – an own goal from Josh Tomlinson and a third from William Smith.

Whing currently has such strong doubts over his young squad getting back into games that he had no confidence in a comeback, even at 1-0.

“We made one mistake; we jumped out of our shape and they went and scored with a great finish,” Whing told @BrackleyTownFC.

“Then, because of how we are at the minute and confidence is pretty low, we folded.

“The own goal straight after half time is a really poor goal to concede and then a really poor free-kick to concede.

“The game is over at 2-0. It probably even was at 1-0 with how fragile this group is at the moment, confidence-wise.”

Usually, Whing’s post-match interviews with the club are videoed and last at least five minutes, sometimes longer. On this occasion, it was audio only and 2:15 in duration.

“We gifted them three goals,” Whing continued. “Their goalkeeper didn’t have too much to do, so I’m really disappointed.

“There are a few individuals in there probably feeling sorry for themselves a little bit. They’ve got a lot to learn but that doesn’t help me with the results. We’ll see where we are.”

As it stands, Whing remains in the Brackley job ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup second qualifying round tie against AFC Portchester (Saturday, September 19, 3pm).
