North Oxfordshire's 'most popular flower and produce show' takes place near Banbury this weekend

South Newington’s Flower and Produce Show – said to be the most popular one of its kind in north Oxfordshire – takes place near Banbury tomorrow (Saturday).

Set on the picturesque village green, tucked away from the road, the show features a grand marquee with displays of home-grown garden produce, home bakes and beautiful hand-crafted items as well as floral displays and a photography section.

"Our tiny village is very proud of its annual event which maintains all the treasured qualities of a traditional rural show,” said co-organiser Nicky Smith.

“With a silver band playing and a tea tent serving home baked cakes and freshly made teas and coffees, it is an oasis of happiness and gentle, competitive fun.”

Prizes are awarded for a wide range of vegetables and produce year including the perennially popular misshapen vegetable class, best Victoria sponge and best basket of vegetables in the ‘chefs’ choice’ class, with over 350 entries in 2025.

The winning entries, judged by independent, external judges, are awarded cups for classes such as best sweet peas, best dahlias and best floral arrangement.

There will also be local arts and crafts for sale, freshly cooked food, an exhibition of village sporting heroes in the church, and children’s games on the village green.

Adults and children can enjoy playing table tennis, to see if they can win a point off local star player, Neil Hodson.

The dog show is also extremely popular, with visitors entering their dogs on the day in a choice of categories including ‘Dog Most Like its Owner’ and ‘Waggiest Tail.’

This year a new poster was produced highlighting the marquee and all the elements of South Newington’s show, with the children’s competition to colour it in won by the Olivia Brecknell.

Entry to the show is £3 with free parking in a field at the top of the village. The show is sponsored by Applegarth Nursery, Chipping Norton.

Amanda Blythe-Smith, chair of the South Newington show said: “Do come and visit our lovely show which opens at 1.30pm on Saturday. The marquee is always a delight with hundreds of entries to look at and with stalls, teas, an exhibition in the church, the dog show and children’s games there really is something for everyone. It’s an affordable and very enjoyable afternoon out for all.”
