Dream comes true for Banbury’s ‘Mr Magic’ as he is crowned masters boxing world champion
It was a night of success on the south coast for Banbury boxer Marlon ‘Mr Magic’ Gray-Deacon, who was crowned Masters boxing welterweight world champion after a thrilling contest in Dorset on Saturday, July 25.
Marlon Gray-Deacon has paid tribute to his wife, coaches, supporters and Team 180 Martial Arts after they travelled with him to Verwood for the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) Welterweight Amateur Masters world title fight.
The Banbury boxer faced former professional and Masters boxing veteran Luke Kearney, who made the long journey from New South Wales, Australia, for the highly anticipated clash.
With the vacant WBF 65kg world title on the line, and both fighters ranked among the best pound-for-pound Masters boxers, the six-round contest was a chance to determine the leading 65kg Masters boxer in the world.

A large crowd packed out the venue for the showdown, which was described by many as one of the most significant Masters boxing contests.
Kearney applied relentless pressure throughout, forcing a high-paced battle from the opening bell to the final round.
Both fighters were pushed to their limits, with Gray-Deacon using his experience and skill to avoid being drawn into his opponent’s style.
After six hard-fought rounds, the referee raised Gray-Deacon’s arm and declared him the new champion.

Newly crowned Mr Magic said: “I have to praise my opponent. Kearney’s determination and constant forward pressure made me earn every moment of the win.
“I landed some heavy shots early on, but Kearney’s resilience was truly incredible.”
The new world champion also praised his travelling supporters for creating an electric atmosphere ringside and helping drive him towards victory.
He said: “More than 50 supporters travelled to cheer me on. Their vocal backing played a huge part in what was a memorable night, and I want to thank everyone who made the journey.
“I also have to pay tribute to my wife Leanne Gray-Deacon for the support day in, day out, and Team 180 Martial Arts, coaches Rob and Charlotte Allen and Brad Hearn for their dedication and preparation.
“I have to credit the team environment as a key factor behind the success. It’s more than a gym; it’s a family that leaves no stone unturned in pursuit of excellence.”
The victory means Mr Magic is now a three-time Masters boxing world champion.
