Banbury road set to partially reopen over weekend following scaffolding collapse
A busy road in Banbury is set to partially reopen this weekend (October 30-31), more than a week after a scaffolding collapse forced its closure.
Cherwell Street has been closed since midday on Wednesday, October 21, following a scaffolding collapse that left two construction workers seriously injured.
The workers were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment. One suffered head and leg injuries, while the other sustained what South Central Ambulance Service described as “severe injuries”.
Today (Friday, October 30), Oxfordshire County Council, following advice from Cherwell District Council, confirmed that the road will partially reopen over the weekend.

The carriageway furthest from the scaffolding site is set to reopen between the George Street and Bridge Street junctions.
However, the council warned that the road is likely to be closed again in the future to allow further operations to make the building site safe.
An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson said: “To maintain traffic flow, some right turns into Lower Cherwell Street and the Morrisons petrol station will be restricted. It is expected that these traffic management arrangements will be in place by some point over the weekend.
“However, Cherwell Street is likely to close again temporarily at some point to allow crane operations to assist in making the site safe.
“The council will await further information from Cherwell District Council and the Health and Safety Executive before progressing to a full reopening.”
