And it was the perfect end to a special day for Saints manager Jon Brady who became a father for the first time earlier in the day. Goals from new signing Greg Kaziboni, Brett Solkhon and substitute Steve Diggin saw off a young Histon side.

Charlie Griffin headed straight at Calum Kitscha as Saints made a bright start. Moments later Glenn Walker broke into area on the end of Eddie Odhiambo pass after neat lay-off by Griffin but Kitscha tipped his shot around the post.

Kaziboni broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when he latched on to a pass from Odhiambo to round Kitscha and slip the ball into an empty net. Saints almost doubled their lead moments later when Kitscha tipped over Walker’s acrobatic effort.

Histon played some neat football but rarely threatened although Nathan Hicks should have done better when the opportunity came his way.

Griffin missed a great chance to double Saints’ advantage immediately after the restart but he took too long and his shot was blocked by Omar Beccles. At the other end Kaine Sheppard tested Billy Turley with a low drive from 25 yards.

With the free running Walker at the heart of all Saints’ attacking play it was only a matter of time until the second goal arrived. Solkhon got it with a 52nd minute header after Ryan Austin returned Walker’s deep corner back to the near post.

It took the second goal to go in before Histon raised the tempo and they went close to reducing the arrears when substitute Michael Built flashed a shot across Turley’s goal after neat approach play by Charlie Day. Hicks should have pulled a goal back when he headed wide from six yards after a great delivery from Grant Roberts but he failed to find the target.

Substitute Eugene Libertucci shot wide in the closing stages but Histon left it too late to get anything from the game and Diggin grabbed a third in stoppage-time after Kitscha could only parry Walker’s low drive.
