Puritans Class makes FA Cup history for Banbury United. Draw for next round happens on Monday

The conditions were not ideal with occasional torrential rain and gusty winds which Banbury had behind their backs in the first half. Hosts took the game to their visitors early on and produced first meaningful chance following a fine move in 17th minute involving Giorgio Rasulo, Pablo Haysham, and Connor Roberts on right hand side who whipped in a cross for Harry Landers to flick a header across face of goal.

Bury Town had a spell mid-way through first half when they were on top. Camal Ramadan had a flicked header turned over by Brandon Hall, and from the subsequent corner Taylor Hasting's low header rebounded off the post.

Soon after the tenacious Jake Chambers-Shaw rode a tackle and played the ball through to Bury Town captain Ollie Hughes who ran into the box and fired the ball into the right hand side of the goal.

Banbury United responded well and within two minutes saw Landers have a powerful drive bounce back off the right hand side of the post, followed soon after by Pablo Haysham having a low drive well saved by the keeper.

Banbury continued to press as the first half drew to a close and came close once again as Kevin Langmead hit the left hand post from eight yards out. But despite huiffing and puffing as much as the weather conditions it remained 1-0 to Bury Town at half-time.

The rain held off for the second half but for the most part it was a damp squib with very few chances being made. However that all changed in the 78th minute by a moment of magic by Jack Self who had been an early enforced substitute for Banbury.

The ball came out to Self from the box 25 yards from goal, he controlled it with his chest then precisely volleyed it over the keeper and into the back of the net.

Banbury United's tails were up and three minutes later they grabbed what proved to be the winner from a terrific low drive by Henry Landers into bottom right hand corner.with eight minutes of normal time remaining.

Banbury United held on to see the match out and progress to the first round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1973 - and the possibility of a plum home tie against Sunderland, Portsmouth or Ipswich Town, or even a more exciting prospect of being drawn against Oxford United to re-unite manager Andy Whing and James Constable with their former club.

Manager Andy Whing said: "I'm absolutely delighted. It was very tough going. I'm so proud of the players who really dug in.

"I had said we needed to shoot more and knew Jack Self had that kind of strike in his locker. I nearly pulled a muscle when Landers struck the winner."
