Driver pleads guilty to causing death of 18-year-old Banbury woman

A driver who was over the drink-drive limit when he got behind the wheel has pleaded guilty to causing the death of 18-year-old Banbury woman Esme Heaton-Biggs.

Brian McLaren, 35, of Vincent Way, Banbury, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving over the legal alcohol limit at Oxford Crown Court on Friday (November 6).

The pleas follow a crash on Bloxham Road on October 3 this year, when McLaren’s Mercedes-AMG collided with a VW Polo being driven by Esme.

Esme’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes across Banbury, with scores of residents leaving flowers and mementos at the crash site and local sports clubs paying tribute to her memory.

In a tribute released through Thames Valley Police, Esme’s family said: “Esme Elizabeth Heaton-Biggs was a funny, kind, stubborn, witty and beautiful human being on the inside and the outside. Loved by family and friends alike, a much loved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and cousin.”

Lead investigating officer Detective Sergeant Lyndsey Blackaby said: “Our thoughts remain with Esme’s family and loved ones, who have suffered a devastating loss as a result of this collision.

“Brian McLaren made the reckless decision to get behind the wheel despite being disqualified from driving and over the prescribed alcohol limit. His actions that evening had tragic consequences and resulted in the death of a young woman.

“No sentence imposed by the courts can undo the pain caused by Esme’s death, but I hope today’s guilty plea provides her family with a measure of comfort and removes the need for a trial.”

Detective Sergeant Blackaby also thanked everyone who assisted with the investigation, as well as members of the public and emergency services who helped at the scene.

She said: “This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from dangerous and irresponsible driving. We will continue to work tirelessly to investigate offences of this nature and bring those responsible before the courts.”

A 24-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman have both been released without further action.

McLaren will appear at Oxford Crown Court for sentencing on Wednesday, December 9.
