Formula 1 STEM challenge day inspires future engineers at North Oxfordshire Academy
North Oxfordshire Academy recently welcomed representatives from The Smallpeice Trust and Formula 1 industry ambassadors for an exciting STEM Challenge Day designed to inspire students to consider future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The event forms part of a national programme delivered by Formula 1, F1 teams and the FIA in partnership with educational charity The Smallpeice Trust, which aims to increase STEM engagement among secondary school students across the UK and showcase the diverse career opportunities available within engineering and motorsport.
Throughout the day, Year 10 students at the school worked in teams to tackle an engineering and problem-solving challenge linked to the world of Formula 1 – designing, building and marketing their own model F1 cars. The challenge encouraged students to apply creativity, analytical thinking and teamwork while developing practical engineering skills.

Students also benefited from an inspiring presentation delivered by three engineers from the Formula 1 team, Alpine Racing. The engineers remained with students throughout the day, offering guidance and advice on the development of the model cars before judging the final designs and presentations.
The extended activity provided students with a valuable opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while gaining an insight into the many career pathways available within motorsport and engineering.
Feedback from students highlighted the positive impact of the experience, with many describing teamwork as one of the most rewarding aspects of the day. Students also praised the opportunity to take part in practical engineering activities and learn directly from industry professionals.
One Year 10 student said: “I really enjoyed it as I worked in a team to reach a final goal.”
Another student added: “This helped me have a good insight into the requirements for engineering jobs."
The event was a great success, with both The Smallpeice Trust educators and the Formula 1 ambassadors praising the enthusiasm, behaviour and engagement demonstrated by North Oxfordshire Academy students.
Ellie Jacobs, Principal at North Oxfordshire Academy, said: “The Formula 1 STEM Challenge Day was a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop new skills, raise their aspirations and explore the exciting possibilities of future STEM careers. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and engagement throughout the day.”
