Brackley Town secure key boost as fan-favourite forward signs contract

Brackley Town have received a significant boost in their quest for an immediate return to the National League, as versatile forward Matt Lowe has officially put pen to paper on a new one-year contract.

The 30-year-old, who has racked up an impressive 398 appearances and 68 goals across two spells with the Saints, was the headline name among five players recently offered fresh terms following the club’s relegation to the National League North.

While much of the 2025/26 squad saw their deals expire, Lowe’s decision to remain at St James Park provides at least some continuity for head coach Andy Whing.

Predominantly utilised as an inverted winger or inside forward, Lowe, whose future was considered a top priority by the Brackley board, was a standout performer during a challenging campaign last season.

His ability to drive inside from wide positions and his directness in the final third made him one of the team’s most consistent offensive threats, even during periods where the Saints struggled for goals.

Beyond his technical attributes, Lowe’s deep-rooted connection to Brackley is invaluable. Having first joined the Saints in 2016, he spent six years at the club and was part of the iconic FA Trophy-winning squad in 2018.

The forward left for Accrington Stanley in 2022 but returned to Northamptonshire in 2024 after a brief stint at Cambridge United. His latest extension reinforces his loyalty to the St James Park faithful.

Lowe joins defender Kyle Morrison in being the only players signed on for 2026/27 as it stands, though three others offered new deals are yet to have their final decisions communicated.

Central defender Zak Lilly turned down new terms in favour of rejoining AFC Telford United, though full-back Tyler Lyttle and midfielders Scott Pollock and Morgan Roberts could yet extend their stays.

For now, Lowe committing his immediate future to the Saints should lift the mood at the football club, especially with no news of fresh signings as of yet.

Whing, Gareth Dean and Joe Taylor are working behind the scenes to secure new arrivals. It won’t be too long until some progress is made.
