Harmonious sound of male voices at church

The Rotary Club of Banbury presents the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir in concert with soprano Tavia Lewis at the venue at 7.30pm.

The choir was formed in 1928 by Welshmen who had come to Oxford looking for work at William Morris’s car factory and Pressed Steel.

Today the choir is more mixed. Many are English, but as a Welsh choir they sing in the traditional 4-part male voice style and a good proportion of their repertoire is in the Welsh language.

Equally at home in village halls or cathedrals, the choir has something of a cult following in and around Oxford. The choir aim to perform, on average, one concert a month for charitable causes. The choir has ventured further afield to venues including Cardiff Arms Park, Westminster Abbey, Dublin, Holland, South Africa and the USA.

Tavia Lewis was crowned Banbury Young Musician of the Year 2015 in February last year, and went on to be runner up in the Rotary District Finals.

Tavia is a member of the Saint James’s Singers with whom she has performed at many venues including St Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford.

During 2015 the choir performed in Bruges and Ghent Cathedrals and at an evening ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

The evening will raise funds for the Rotary End Polio Now Campaign.
