Head coach James Kerr will be looking for Banbury Bulls to follow up Saturday’s first home league success in this weekend’s Oxon Knockout Cup tie.

The holders entertain Grove in the first round at Bodicote Park where Bulls produced a memorable maiden bonus point victory against Reading in Saturday’s South West One East clash.

We feel we deserve to be in this division but it was crucial we beat Reading

President’s Day at Bodicote Park was dedicated to the late Tim Rogers and Kerr was delighted that his side marked the occasion with a much-needed victory against another team in the wrong half of the table.

Kerr said: “Tim Rogers was a massive part of Banbury Rugby Club and it was great to get our first home win and play some good rugby on a special day at the club.

“We feel we deserve to be in this division but it was crucial we beat Reading. They are now second from bottom but that could so easily be us.

“Now we’ve got to look to build on this, if we don’t then Saturday’s victory will be devalued.

“We had set a target of three wins out of the next four games against teams around us to set us up for the new year when we face some of the top teams again.

“Following the defeat against Oxford Harlequins we knew we had to pick up points against teams around us in the table.

“We made a few small improvements to our game and that enabled to get the bonus-point victory on Saturday. It was a very good, rounded display especially in the second half.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s tie, Kerr added: “Our aim at the start of the season was to stay in this division and retain the cup. A win is a win in any competition, in the league or the cup, and we’ll be aiming for one on Saturday.

“We let slip a winning position against Grove here earlier in the season. If we get into a winning position again on Saturday we must look to close out the game this time.”
