Wembley beckons as Saints look to cause another upset

Kevin Wilkin’s side head to York City for Saturday’s quarter-final tie as the second lowest ranked side left in the competition.

But Saints have enjoyed a great run so far in England’s biggest non-League cup competition and the Vanarama National League North side will not be overawed by their trip to Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen are second from bottom of the Vanarama National League following a run of just one win in seven outings.

Saints got back to winning ways on Tuesday and Wilkin said: “York and us have been on a similar run of late so it was good for us to get back to winning ways before Saturday’s game.

“Our results haven’t been great of late although some of the performances have been okay. So it was important to get the right result on Tuesday.

“If we get the rub of the green there is no reason why we can’t go to York and get a result. But any team that gets this far in the competition is going to be decent.

“We’re three games away from Wembley and it would be great to get through and give ourselves a chance of getting there in a two-legged semi-final. It’s a massive game for us, we’re not underestimating York despite their position, they’ve brought in a lot of experienced Football League players.

“They will have a real presence up front but if we can play like we have done in previous cup games this season we will have a chance. York are scrapping and battling so we will have to be at our best to get through the game.

“Our performances, up until the last month or so, have been good on the road. We’ve been doing better away from home which is surprising because the surface at St James Park is excellent and should suit our passing game.”
