All day event to mark Armed Forces Day

The free event is being organised jointly by Banbury Town Council, the 142 Vehicle Squadron (based in Banbury) and the town’s army, navy and air force cadet corps and will feature dozens of military displays, vehicles and demonstrations.

Gates will open to the public at 10.30am with arena events starting at noon with the Air Training Corps Band.

There will be arena displays, Trooping the Colour, continuity drills, static displays and a flypast by a Second World War Hurricane fighter plane from the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to take place at 4.05pm. Army reservists will stage a logistics battle scene and the Sea Cadets will stage gun run in the arena as well as making use of the canal for canoe demonstrations.

In addition the event will feature the world famous Royal Artillery Band during the afternoons Trooping the Colour ceremony along with Beat Retreat a band of the Royal Artillery.

Major Jeremy Burnan, officer commanding the Banbury-based 142 Vehicle Squadron, said: ”Once again, a world-class military band will lead the ceremonies. The Band of the Royal Artillery plays regularly at royal events, the Changing of the Guard and at prestigious venues throughout the world. Banbury is up there with them.”

For the more daring visitors there will be plenty of ‘hands on’ opportunities including a flight simulator, a climbing wall and an obstacle course.

Also confirming their presence at the event will be a robotic bomb disposal team.

Leader of the town council Kieron Mallon said: “This will be a rare opportunity for people to see and hear the best Britain has in military terms.”

“I urge local people to turn out on the day to support our Armed Forces and enjoy what will be magnificent event. Getting the Royal Artillery Band is a real coup for the town.”
