Banbury Guardian couple celebrate diamond wedding anniversary

A couple who met at the Banbury Guardian many years ago celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this month.

Angela and Michael Kennard both worked at the paper in the 1950s and tied the knot on March 8, 1958 – and it snowed!

“It snowed when we came of the church, it wasn’t very much but it was bitterly cold and stopped shortly afterwards,” Angela said.

Angela worked in the advertisement department for nearly 10 years while Michael had various different roles before leaving in 1976.

Michael is a sports fanatic, having played for Banbury United Football Club and turning down Oxford United FC, as well as cricket which they used to do after work.

Angela said they used to enjoy going dancing in their younger years.

The couple got married at the former Christchurch on Broad Street before a reception at the Grand Cafe on Parsons Street.

To mark the diamond anniversary, the family enjoyed breakfast at the Red Lion pub in Bloxham, which Angela said was ‘lovely’.

The 83-year-olds now live in Hanwell having raised two daughters and a son.

Michael has dementia which Angela said ‘has taken the pleasure out of life’ but says they are happy, which is the main thing.

“We keep on going as things could be a lot worse, he’s happy so I’m happy, we can’t change anything can we and I don’t think I would anyway,” Angela said.

“Where have all those years gone? I can’t remember a lot but I suppose if you are busy looking after three children, a house and a job, it all flies by.”
