The Banbury Grumpy Weatherman: £112 Reasons to Stay Grumpy - Why I’m Choosing the Aldi Queue over a Corporate Payout
Monday’s forecast is—dare I say it—sunny, with a high of 13°C. But don’t let the blue skies fool you; there was a proper storm waiting in my post this week.
In 2023, my water was £30 a month. Today, the reality of my latest metered bill effectively puts me at £112. My family’s habits haven't changed one bit. We aren’t running a car wash on the driveway, and unless I’ve accidentally opened a Roman bathhouse in the spare room, someone is taking the absolute mickey.

We have officially hit the “Utility Flip.” My electricity bill—the one that powers the gadgets, the lights, and charges the car—is now officially cheaper than my water bill. It’s a strange world when it’s more affordable to charge a tonne of machinery to drive to Oxford than it is to wash the dinner plates. It’s like going to the pub and finding out a glass of tap water costs more than a double gin and tonic.
With utilities bleeding me dry, I was ripe for a lifeline. Then, as if the universe wanted to test my patience, an hour after opening that bill, a corporate monolith offered me £2,500. All I had to do was stand in front of Banbury Cross, flash a smile, and tell the town how brilliant their brand is.

I didn’t just stare at the email; I immediately opened my banking app. That £2,500 would have wiped out my overdraft in a single click. Let’s be honest: if you’re a parent staring at a mortgage hike or the rising cost of a weekly shop, you take that money. I get it. I’ve been there. I’d tip my hat to any dad or mum who took that cheque to look after their family.
But for me? I hit delete.
The reason isn’t that I’m some moral crusader; it’s that I’m simply too old to change where I shop. I’m set in my ways. I like going into town, I like my spot in the Aldi queue, and I like being able to look my neighbours in the eye. If I take that money to tell a fairy tale, I trade away the only thing I’ve got left: the trust of Banbury. I’m too old to learn how to hide behind a pair of sunglasses every time I need a loaf of bread. Life in a town as great as ours is just too small for that kind of baggage.
I’ll take the massive bill over the hidden price tag.
