Will McCubbin, who teaches PE at North Oxfordshire Academy, will travel to Japan at the end of October, as part of the England Deaf Rugby squad after overcoming significant challenges both on and off the pitch.

Will began playing rugby at the age of six with his local club in Northumberland. Having lived with significant hearing loss all his life, he has spent his rugby career playing alongside fully hearing teammates, developing resilience and determination that have helped him succeed at the highest levels of the game.

His passion and commitment to rugby have taken him around the world, including earning a university scholarship in the United States and representing England Deaf Rugby on several international tours.

Being selected for the Deaf Rugby World Cup is particularly meaningful following a major setback just two years ago. In December 2024, Will underwent major shoulder surgery but was determined to return to full fitness and put himself in contention for a place in the World Cup squad.

Will said:

"Playing rugby has taught me to be resilient and not allow barriers to limit my ambitions. Having significant hearing loss is something I have dealt with throughout my life, both in school and in sport, but it has never stopped me pursuing my goals.

"Being selected for the upcoming Deaf Rugby World Cup in Japan is a special moment for me. When I had major shoulder surgery in December 2024, I was determined to be fit and ready to compete for a place in the squad. Having returned to playing and being selected is something I am incredibly proud of.

"In the previous tournament we finished third, so I hope we can go a little bit further and bring home the trophy this year."

Principal, Ellie Jacobs added:

“North Oxfordshire Academy is proud to celebrate Will’s achievement and wishes him and the England Deaf Rugby team every success as they prepare to compete on the world stage.

The selection is a testament to Will’s dedication, perseverance and passion for sport, as well as providing an inspiring example for students across the Academy that determination and hard work can help overcome any obstacles.”
