Prize of £1,000 offered in challenge with one of Britain’s strongest men at Banbury Mayor’s party

It’s a favourite date on the Banbury calendar and the Town Mayor’s Sunday in People’s Park will have a special ingredient – £1,000 on offer for someone who can match one of Britain’s strongest men.

The event this Sunday, July 10, will feature games, stalls, funfair rides, food and drink – and a big-money challenge by The Mighty Smith.

Adrian Smith is a three-times winner of the UK’s Strongest Man title and will put on a show geared for family fun.

He will pull vehicles, bend six-inch nails with his teeth, hold a chair in his teeth with someone sat in it, present a children’s prize tug of war and other feats of strength.

A £1,000 open challenge will also give would-be strong men or women the chance to compete with the champion.

Banbury mayor Jayne Strangwood is inviting townspeople young and old to join her in the park for the day of music, games and arena entertainment.

Admission is free and the party will start at 11am and continue until 3pm.

A dog show organised by Dogs for Good and a display of emergency vehicles will be added attractions, as will stalls run by charities and traders.

Cllr Strangwood said: “Town Mayor’s Sunday is traditionally a family favourite. They can take part in the fun or they can simply settle down to watch.

“It’s a day when whole families can come out together and enjoy themselves.”

She added: “I’m really looking forward to being there and seeing lots of happy faces.”
