The comic side of Britain at war

Critically acclaimed theatre company Fol Espoir have joined forces with hilarious trio The Real Macguffins to bring a new Second World War comedy caper to the stage.

The show was first developed in Oxfordshire at Chipping Norton Theatre and is returning to the source of its creation for one night only next week.

Based on a pamphlet issued by the US war office in 1942, Instructions for American Servicemen in Britain pokes fun at British eccentricities and the American troops who tried to understand them.

The show’s director John Walton said: “I stumbled upon the Instructions a few years ago and I’ve been wanting to make a show based on them ever since. They’re such an endearing and loving snapshot of the country at a unique moment in its history. At the same time, they just seemed perfect for comic exploration.”
