Helen Edmundson’s new play Queen Anne is playing at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon during December and January.

The title role is being played by Emma Cunniffe, who appeared in the well-known 1990s television series The Lakes as well as a previous RSC production of Wendy & Peter Pan.

Featuring as Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough is Natascha McElhone. As well as appearing on stage, she has also been cast in Hollywood films such as The Truman Show and Solaris.

Emmerdale Actor Robert Cavanagh is taking on the character of John Churchill, Sarah’s husband. He recently played the recurring role of Ian in the popular rural soap.

The play is set in 1702 with England extremely close to war and William III on the throne. Princess Anne is due to succeed him.

But her advisors and close friends, including the Duchess of Marlborough, start to apply pressure despite the princess wanting to purse her own agenda.

With the future of the country at stake, Anne has to make decisions on where her loyalties lie. It is either that or sacrifice her own relationships.

Queen Anne will run at the RSC’s Swan Theatre from Friday December 4 to Saturday January 23.

There are a range of matinee and evening performancees.
