There haven’t been many fully fledged console motocross games in recent years so when they come around I’m always intrigued.

MXGP 2020 The Official Motocross Videogame was born back in 2014 and there have been six iterations up to the 2020 release - all of which have had tweaked names.

But if you hadn’t guessed from the title, this is the official video game of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Now next generation gamers can get involved too as MXGP 2020 TOMV is now available for PlayStation 5.

And it comes with a host of exclusive features to boot.

The new DualSense control pads give a real dirt bike experience like never before. And it genuinely adds a great deal to the gameplay experience.

Resolution has been bumped to 4K with strong 60 FPS on PS5 which enhances the graphical detail and makes for a smoother experience.

And best of all you can now compete in online races with up to 14 players.

But it’s up to you how you enjoy MXGP 2020. There’s career mode where you start off as a rookie in the Motocross world. You can either sign up to one of the official teams or even create your own. And as you might expect you race your way through the official 2020 season.

There is the track editor to keep your interest long after career mode is done and dusted. You can choose between four different terrain types and use heightmaps to create the track your track in a realistic way carving through hills and mountains. You can also share your creations or download new ones.

Racing against friends or free roaming together in the new Playground area is where MXGP 2020 comes into its own, though. This is far from perfect by any means and you do get the feeling it barely even scratches the surface of what the game could be in the future when truly harnessing the PS5’s power. One big benefit noticeable straightaway, though, is the superfast load times.

Milestone have built a really solid game here. Just enough for fan boys of the sport to scratch that itch. And just enough to fill the Motocross void on next gen. But not quite with the kind of bells, whistles, spill and thrills we should expect from a game on a next gen console.

There is plenty of promise here, though, despite the lack of content and rather bland environments.

But make no mistake this is the best entry in the series to date and there really is a feeling it is only just getting started. The next release will be a truer reflection of the series’s staying power in video gaming.
