Munday finds himself in a rut as team suffers on road

Shutt VR RT's first road race of the season saw a strong team of Luke Souter, Keiran Munday, Jos Busby and junior rider George Day line-up for the Spring Chicken road race.

Notorious for its weather and road conditions, the race is usually taken by the rider who copes best. It was a tough race as nobody could form any kind of breakaway.

Eventually a small group did get clear and held a small advantage. Busby and Souter formed the spearhead of the SVR RT plan to look after young sprinter Munday and took to the front several times to bring back the riders up the road.

Junior rider Day had a torrid time with his gear restrictions and struggled to stay with the group. With Munday feeling comfortable in the bunch, Souter and Busby continued to sacrifice themselves pulling hard to keep the breakaway in check.

Busby finally managed to reel them in with just 2km to go. Souter still had a little left and, as the pace increased for the sprint, attempted to lead Munday into position.

Taking a wide line, Munday came into the finishing straight with around 20 riders in front. Opening up his sprint, Munday started to pass riders but failed to spot a large pot-hole.

He clattered his bike so hard that his handlebars shifted and his momentum was wiped out. Munday finished in 14th place and Souter held on for a top-25 spot.
