Newly-promoted Banbury head to Marlow for Saturday’s South Clubs Womens’ Hockey League fixture having earned a point in Saturday’s opener.

Vicky page hit the equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw with Spencer in Saturday’s division two fixture against a Spencer side wich enjoyed a top three finish last season.

Banbury were slow to get into the game against the London side who took the lead midway through the first half. But Banbury responded well to settle into the game and quickly become dominant over a tiring Spencer side.

After a number of good passages of play Banbury equalised when a superb line ball from Holly Johnson found Jenny Marsh on the right who was able to place the ball back into the centre of the pitch for Becca Edwards to run on to, she drove the ball into the D and Page lobbed the Spencer keeper with a reverse stick flick.

The second half became a well fought battle but both teams missed several opportunities to go in front. Spencer won several short corners in the second half but Aveline Cruikshank made a commendable debut in Banbury’s defensive short corner set-up, managing to block each of their strikes at goal.

Some gritty defending by the new back line pairing of Juliet Gardner and Hayley Nunneley kept Spencer’s slick attackers at bay for the rest of the game.
