Lay takes his maiden win for RAW

After a test session earlier in the week, Julian Lay decided to hand his RAW Motorsports prepared Radical SR1 over to his son Patrick for the weekends Radical SR1 Cup races at Donington Park.

And the decision proved a wise one as he took his maiden victory. The former Mazda MX5 racer qualified in second place for the Banbury based team and only 0.441 seconds off pole position.

In the first race and pole-man James Pinkerton led into Redgate, with Lay fighting over second with championship leader Ryan Harper-Ellam. Having immediately retaken third into the Esses he challenged Harper-Ellam again on the second lap.

Only Pinkerton was ahead of him and a lap later they were nose to tail for the lead. With Pinkerton then spinning and colliding with Harper-Ellam, the lead suddenly grew and Lay’s maiden victory was secured by over six seconds from the recovering Pinkerton, while team-mate Gavin McAlpine fought his way up from ninth place to seventh with a lap to go.

Several drivers went for the wet tyres in race two as it was expected to get wetter, Lay was among them but the wet track began to dry.

Although McAlpine lost out on the opening lap, he fought back into the top ten by lap two and continued to make progress into eighth by the end of lap four. His next target was Dean Warriner but Ross Elliott was closing in on him and a retirement beckoned on the very last lap.
