Banbury United manager Mike Ford sang the praises of his young players after they secured an Evo-Stik Southern League play-off place.

Ricky Johnson’s 25th goal of the season proved decisive in the 1-0 win at Didcot Town in Saturday’s Division One South & West clash.

But the Puritans were missing key players for a tough test and Ford said: “I’ve got the best group of players in this division, they’re still young boys but they played like men.

“We had several players missing but that gives others the opportunity like Jacob Blackstock who was outstanding, especially for a 17-year-old on his full debut, he had a huge game in such an important fixture.

“Charlie Wise was desperate to play but I sent him home, he wasn’t well enough, and decided we needed Ricky Johnson’s experience at the back. We’ve kept a clean sheet and we always looked dangerous on the break.”
