Wilkin wants Saints to quickly get over FA Trophy heartache

Veteran striker Jon Parkin grabbed the solitary goal as Saints bowed out of the FA Trophy in Saturday’s quarter-final tie at York City.

Laurie Walker denied Parkin from the penalty spot before keeping out a header from the experienced striker moments later. But the Minstermen got the winner on the half-hour mark from Parkin’s header.

It was all Saints in the second half. York keeper Kyle Letheren clawed Alex Gudger’s header off the line before Jimmy Armon’s 30 yard volley came back off the bar.

Substitute Danny Holmes received a second yellow card before Gudger headed against the bar in a frantic finale that York somehow survived.

Wilkin said: “The wind made things very difficult in the first half but we threw the kitchen sink at York in the second period and it was disappointing not to get a goal. I thought we moved the ball around really well and our passing was tremendous.

“Fair play to York, we would have liked another bite at the cherry but they are the ones in the hat and good luck to them. Now we have to stay strong and resolute because we have a tough game on Tuesday and have to be ready for that.”
