Wilkin keen to see Brackley Town keep their fine run going

Kevin Wilkin knows it’s the winning that matters as Brackley Town bid to keep their fine form going when they head to Hereford this weekend.

The Saints moved into the top five of the Vanarama National League North on Tuesday night as they followed up the 1-1 draw with Kettering Town at the weekend with a 2-0 success over Darlington at St James Park.

Wes York put Wilkin’s team into an early lead with James Armson wrapping up the points late on in the second half.

Brackley are now unbeaten in their last eight league matches and have picked up five victories along the way.

But Wilkin knows things won’t get any easier for them at Hereford on Saturday.

“It’s not been the most attractive of football at times but that’s not the important thing,” the Brackley boss said.

“The most important thing is winning games and it doesn’t matter how you do that as long as you do.

“We just want to try to keep this run going and keep it going for as long as possible.

“Hereford are a big club but Darlington are another big club and we have beaten them on Tuesday night so, from a stature prospective, it doesn’t get any harder but we have proved this sort of game holds no fear for us and it’s important we just carry on.

“It’s never an easy place to go but I don’t think there are any givens in this league.

“We didn’t beat Blyth Spartans convincingly and they are at the foot of the table.

“None of the games are easy, it’s a very competitive league and that’s why the league table looks so open at the moment.”

Wilkin was delighted with the result on Tuesday night but, not for the first time this season, it came at a cost with captain Gaz Dean being withdrawn because of injury while the likes of Lee Ndlovu and Glenn Walker were already missing.

“Darlington are a good team, they open it up and make the game very big and expansive,” the Saints boss said.

“They worked the ball well but we did well to limit their chances.

“We scored at a great time after a couple of minutes and that was a great reaction from Saturday so we got ourselves into a good position early and then scored late on to calm any nerves.

“We had to work hard and stay organised for that period in between.

“We have done really well to get in this position with the injury crisis we have had and for the lads to keep achieving these results is fantastic.

“Long may it continue but we are very stretched at the moment.

“If you look at the likes of Lee, Gaz, Connor Franklin who is just coming back and Glenn Walker, these are players who have been mainstays of our group for quite some time now.

“The other lads are stepping up and you have to give them credit for what they have done.”
