United respond to incident involving Shamsi at Royston

Banbury United’s Ravi Shamsi was the victim of alleged racist abuse during Saturday’s BetVictor Southern League clash at Royston Town.

The incident took place in the second half and was promptly dealt with by Royston officials.

A statement from Banbury United read: ‘The club condemn the behaviour of a spectator at the game at Royston Town who directed a racist comment at one of our players.

‘The alleged perpetrator was identified and swiftly escorted from the ground thanks to prompt action by Royston officials.

‘There is of course no place for racism in football or any part of society. It is abhorrent.

‘The home club have assured us that they will take further action and will advise us of this. The incident will be included in the match officials’ report.’

A statement from Royton read: ‘Following an incident during the game against Banbury United, Royston Town FC would like to make it clear that the club does not and will not accept racism or discrimination in any form.

‘Rest assured, we take any such incidents extremely seriously and shall take the strongest possible action against any individual found to be behaving in such a way, including stadium bans. The club will fully investigate the incident and upon conclusion, will take the necessary action against the individual.

‘In line with the FA’s protocol, the individual concerned was immediately ejected from the ground by Royston Town FC officials. The club will be making no further public comment until the investigations are completed.’
