Overall, the contest failed to come to life as perspiration won out over inspiration in a drab encounter of few goal scoring chances.

Saints began well passing the ball neatly on a difficult surface with Glenn Walker an immediate threat on the left. But as the early promise faded Curzon came more into the game and created the only goal threat of the half as Ryan Hall was thwarted by the intervention of Saints captain Gareth Dean.

The second half offered the meagre crowd a little more in the way of goalmouth action. Laurie Walker saved well from Matt Warburton after a quick break by the home side and twice Dean was called upon to save the day.

Saints could have won it when Jimmy Armson’s shot was saved by the legs of Hakan Burton after a fine move that saw Adam Walker find Armson with a neat cross. Late on, substitute David Pitt was picked out by Steve Diggin but the striker’s shot was deflected over the bar for a rare corner.

But Saints were left to rue a missed opportunity to close the gap on the teams above them as only Tamworth could win on an afternoon of surprises.
