But they had to do it the hard way, coming from behind to beat Stratford Town 2-1 in Saturday’s Evo-Stik Southern League clash. All the goals came in the second half of the premier division derby with Ben Stephens giving Stratford the advantage only for United to level through Guy Clark’s own goal before Callum White bagged the stoppage-time winner.

Ford said: “The players showed a lot of resilience and mental toughness, and they got their reward. To come from behind to win any game is difficult but to do it when you are 1-0 down late on was an outstanding effort from the players.

“We’ve not had a lot of luck recently but I sensed my team had it in them to get that result. Stratford were a difficult side to beat, it was tight, but we deserved to win it.

“We were on the offensive from the start and must have had 25 corners in the game.

“We wanted to get Marvin Martin and Callum White further up the pitch and we got the ball forward quicker. Both wing-backs got the goals, because I’m sure Marvin will claim the first one!

“I didn’t make more substitutions because I felt we were on top and had a foothold in the game. The one change, bringing George Jeacock on and moving Zac McEachran, worked for us, they couldn’t cope with him.

“Supporters are always urging the manager to make changes. But leave it to me, even through I don’t always get it right!”
