But the Puritans needed a penalty shoot-out to beat a young Oxford United side in Wednesday's quarter-final tie after the two sides finished all square at 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra-time.

United let slip a two-goal advantage following first half goals from Ricky Johnson and Lee Henderson. Johnson headed United into a 31st minute lead from a corner and the returning Henderson did likewise three minutes before the break. Oxford reduced the arrears shortly after the restart through Kyran Lofthouse but United looked to have done enough to get through until Fabion Lopes equalised in stoppage-time.

Neither side could find a winner in extra-time and so it went to penalties with Johnson converting the winning spot-kick after Lopes and Leon Chambers-Parillon both saw their efforts saved by Jack Harding.
