Northam at the double as super Sports stun Thame

Easington Sports produced arguably their best display so far as they progressed to the third round of the Bluefin Sports Insurance League Cup with a 2-0 victory over UHLSport Hellenic League high-fliers Thame United.

Josh Northam bagged both goals as the Division One West side saw off their premier division visitors.

Although Thame were without top scorers Andrew Gledhill and Lynton Goss, they still fielded a strong side and can have no complaints about the result.

Keeper Jack Goode had to be alert to come off his line to deal with through balls but Sports grew into the tie and the pace of Andrew Stidder and Durrell Livous gave the Thame defence plenty of problems.

The breakthrough came in the 31st minute following another corner. A half clearance was sent back into the box, Henry Craven fumbled the cross and Northam fired over the stranded keeper.

Thame responded well with Goode having to be alert again to keep out a close range shot from Luke Ricketts.

After the restart, Thame worked opportunities around the edge of the box but Sports were a threat on the break.

But Sports doubled their lead on the hour mark when a well worked move saw Mike Spaull cross to the far post where Northam’s header hit the upright before rebounding back across goal for him to finish well.

Livous continued to stretch the game and Stidder had the chance to finish the visitors off after his strike partner squared the ball back to him but he shot over the bar.

Thame briefly threatened when Ricketts cut inside from the right and his low shot saw Goode tip the ball around the post. Northam missed the chance to claim a memorable hat-trick from a tight angle and Josh Rose also had a header cleared off the line.
