Banbury United bos Mike Ford was full of praise for his players after they knocked Evo-Stik Southern League leaders Chippenham Town off top spot in midweek.
The Puritans ended Chippenham’s unbeaten start thanks to George Nash’s first half goal before having captain Andy Gunn dismissed. But Ford saw his side produce a battling display, even taking into account Chippenham were also down to ten men in the second half.
It would have been easy to say to the players this was a free game and one we were not expected to get anything fromPuritans boss Mike Ford
He said: “When you come to the leaders who haven’t lost you have to be prepared to fight, scrap and work your socks off as well as play attractive football.
“It would have been easy to say to the players this was a free game and we’re not expected to get anything from it. But it was a game I wanted us to win.
“When it was 11 v 11, it suited us because we played better football than them and we thoroughly deserved our lead. After Andy Gunn was sent off we were up against it but we managed to get to halftime and they had a player sent off.
“We’ve won it, not in the style I like us to, but it was a great effort from the players.”
