Banbury United recovered to book their place in the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup with a 2-1 victory at Coventry Sphinx in Monday’s first round tie.
Lewis Rankin gave Sphinx the second half advantage but United hit back to win it with goals from Leam Howards and Zac McEachran.
Darius Browne went close before the home side began to have the better of the game and looked the more likelier to open the scoring. But the closest they came was when Lewis McBride let fly from just inside the area with the ball going just over the bar.
United were fortunate to still be on level terms at the break so it was no surprise when they went behind five minutes after the restart when a corner was headed home by Rankin.
United struggled to get back into the tie but they equalised against the run of play in the 69th minute when Ricky Johnson headed the ball on to McEachran who advanced before crossing low for the incoming Howards to convert at the far post.
A minute later Howards hit the post from the edge of the area but United got what proved to be the winner in the 72nd minute when a quick fee-kick caught out the home side with Johnson releasing McEachran who beat the keeper with an angled drive from 12 yards.
Sphinx piled on the pressure in the closing stages but some good goalkeeping from Jack Harding, plus some wayward finishing, saw United hold on to make progress into the next round.
