Sports won Saturday’s Division One West clash 1-0 at Shrivenham where they dominated for long periods before Markham won it in the 72nd minute for the visitors.

The returning Sam Grant headed wide at the far post from Andrew Stidder’s deep cross before firing wide with a snap-shot moments later.

Markham shot over from the edge of the box and Adil Hussain raced clear but his lob went wide. Good work from Conor Grant on the left flank provided another opening for Hussain but he could only fire wide.

Another cross from Stidder saw Sam Grant off target as Sports looked for the breakthrough.

Shrivenham offered little in the final third but immediately after the restart Callum Little forced Jack Goode to tip his 20 yard shot around the post.

Sports soon got back on top, Tom Smith burst into the box but was forced wide and could only fire into the side-netting while Sam Grant shot over from 25 yards. Markham finally broke the deadlock when he controlled the ball on the edge of the box before finding the bottom corner of the net.

Shrivenham had some pressure in the closing stages, substitute Jamie McGahey saw his shot superbly turned away by Goode but it took a goal-line clearance from Lewis Travers to keep out a late header.
