‘Man of my word’ - Brackley Town legend Gareth Dean says St James Park farewells after announcing retirement
Brackley Town captain Gareth ‘Gaz’ Dean has played his final home game for the Saints after calling time on his playing career, at the age of 36.
Dean enjoyed a tremendous send-off in his final game at St James Park, marking his 450th Brackley appearance by scooping the man-of-the-match award in a 2-1 victory over Aldershot Town.

Although Brackley had already been relegated from the Enterprise National League, it was a significant win – the Saints’ first in 15 matches.
Dean, loyal to Brackley for a decade since joining from Solihull Moors in 2016, scored in the infamous 2018 FA Trophy win over Bromley at Wembley.
The centre-half also led the Saints to their historic promotion to the English fifth tier as National League North champions in 2024/25.
Dean could have continued his career at a lower level but he wanted to end it on a high note. He’s certainly done that, representing Brackley at their highest-ever level and recently becoming the club’s record appearance maker.
“I’ve decided to finally hang up my boots after 18 seasons and 830 career appearances,” Dean said in an open letter to supporters.
“The truth is, I’ve dreaded this day – not because I’m in love with football, but because I’ll miss the competition, the opponents, the battles, my teammates and staff, and of course the supporters and volunteers.
“I always promised myself I wanted to be remembered for the player I have been, not someone who stayed one year too long.
“I feel that time is now, to step aside and let someone else take the reins. I’m aware I could play for more years and continue to drop levels for comfort, but truth is, it’s just not me!
“I wanted to compete at the highest level in my final year, which is reflective of my character. I’ve pushed myself and tested myself continuously throughout my career.
“I also promised myself I would retire at the club I’ve chosen to be loyal to for the past decade, and I’m a man of my word.”
Rounding off his statement, Dean added: “This is a goodbye as a player, but I’m excited to remain at the club in another capacity.
“Don’t be sad it’s over. Be grateful it’s happened. Love to you all, I’ll miss you! Skip.”
The recent relegation from the National League is certainly a huge blow, but Dean will remain with the Saints in an off-field role, eager to help the club bounce back as quickly as possible under head coach Andy Whing.
Brackley’s board of directors penned in a statement: “While we will deeply miss seeing him don the captain's armband, we are thrilled that Gaz will continue to play a vital role at the club.
"His transition from player to a key operational figure will ensure that his wealth of experience and knowledge enhances our future endeavours.
"We look forward to working alongside him as he bridges the gap between our football operations and the strategic vision of the board."
