Steve Howkins put Sports back on level terms in Oxon Senior Cup tie

Two late goals from Sam Humphreys ended Easington Sports’ run in the Oxon Senior Cup on Tuesday.

A young Oxford United side booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory against the UHLSport Hellenic League outfit.

With the tie looking as though it would be heading for extra-time, Humphreys struck twice in the rearranged quarter-final tie at Abingdon United’s Northcourt Road ground.

It was tough on Craig Pearman’s side and especially keeper Darren Booker who made some excellent saves in the early stages of the tie.

Booker kept Oxford out until the 38th minute when former Banbury United on-loan midfielder Aidan Hawtin broke the deadlock when he raced on to a Seth Humphries pass before cutting inside and firing into the top corner from the edge of the box.

But Sports were back on level terms on the stroke of halftime when Steve Howkins took advantage of a defensive error to beat Jack Stevens.

Neither side was able to get on top in the second half and the game looked set for extra-time until Oxford regained the lead with nine minutes left when Humphreys beat Booker with a deflected effort

The Oxford winger finally put the tie out of Sports’ reach in stoppage-time when he beat Booker form the penalty spot following a foul on Freddie Grant.
