‘I apologise’: Brackley Town boss Whing remorseful after ‘worrying’ Buxton thrashing

Brackley Town boss Andy Whing apologised to supporters after his side were thrashed 5-0 away at Buxton on Tuesday night (September 8).

The Saints responded well to get into half time at 1-0 down after conceding just seven minutes in, however a calamitous second period saw Buxton score four more.

Away fans making the 240-mile round trip left the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium crestfallen.

There were also many replies to Brackley social media posts calling for Whing to either be sacked or to resign.

“It’s extremely difficult and I’m obviously really disappointed,” Whing told @BrackleyTownFC.

“I thought they (Buxton) were excellent, they pressed us really well and worked their socks off to force us into mistakes.

“I thought we made a lot of mistakes tonight. We also didn’t put their back line under any real pressure, especially in behind.

“We’re massively missing Mozza (captain Kyle Morrison). Our back four couldn’t deal with them and our mistakes compounded it.”

Albeit with a game in hand, Brackley are now 20th in the National League North with just two wins in their opening seven matches.

It was always going to be difficult as it’s a completely different squad to last season with 17 new signings. But a start this poor is unacceptable, and Whing knows it.

“We’re really young and naive but we can’t keep using that as an excuse,” Whing admitted.

“They need to learn quickly. We miss first contact and second balls and that sets the tone.

“We looked so organised against Macclesfield, Chorley and South Shields. Today we looked disorganised. That’s worrying, so we’ll look at that.”

Whing has spotted a possible trend of his players struggling in midweek fixtures and that’s something he wants to end immediately.

He explained: “There’s got to be something there, whether they’re not preparing for games or not. They have all the information; we send everything to them.

“Maybe I’ll have to take that out of their hands a bit and do something different. We are always trying to do things better.

“For our supporters who have come tonight, I obviously apologise for that because that’s nowhere near it.

“I don’t think this group deserve that (result) for what they’ve done so far, but that can’t happen with heads dropping and mistakes happening.”

Brackley will be looking for a spirited response in their next game, as they take on Morecambe away from home at 3pm on Saturday, September 12.
