Giles accepts season might be over for Sports

With all their games in hand, there was every possibility that Easington Sports could have finished their first season in the premier division of the uhlsport Hellenic League in the top five.

But it looks increasingly as though the season will not be completed, much to the frustration of manager Matt Giles.

It looks as though some local cricket leagues may not take place which would ease some pressure on football clubs at this level in terms of player availability and grounds which are used for both sports. That would open a window for leagues to be completed in May or June but it’s still a long shot.

Giles said: “It’s very frustrating but it’s not about football now, it’s moved on from there.

“Even when the first games were postponed there was still some optimism that we would finish the season but now that doesn’t look possible. I would imagine the league will knock it on the head and start again next season.

“We had a good chance of making the top five and were also into the last eight of one of the cups. Our aim was to achieve both, a top five finish and to win a cup.

“We would probably have ended up playing four games in ten days towards the end of the season but clubs wouldn’t be able to do that over a four-week period.

“Even if the league did start again in say May would there be time for players to get fit again because it would be like a pre-season? If we go into lock-down for a long time I can’t see anything taking place.
