Despite his seeing his side chalk up their fourth straight Evo-Stik Southern League success, Banbury United boss Mike Ford is urging caution.

The Puritans entertain lowly Wimborne Town in Saturday’s Division One South & West clash but Ford says supporters should not get carried away even though they have seen their side move into the play-offs.

I’ve got to make sure I keep everyone’s feet firmly on the ground

Ford said: “We can’t afford to get ahead of ourselves.

“We’ve come a long way since the start of the season and we’ve got to where we are now quicker than I imagined we would. We had a decent start and have shown recently we can compete with the best teams in this division.

“But we’ve always got to be prepared for failure because it is always around the corner. The supporters will be expecting us to win again on Saturday but I’ve got to make sure everyone’s feet remain firmly on the ground.”

United’s brand of attacking football has won many admirers and Ford wants his side to reproduce that at Spencer Stadium but is guarding against complacency.

He added: “We owe it to ourselves and the supporters, who have been brilliant on our travels, to play attacking football and create plenty of chances against Wimborne. But they will have a big incentive to come here and upset the apple cart.

“Wimborne won at Yate Town so I think they are better than their position suggests. They’ve got a new manager and it will be a difficult test so we need to do the same things we did at Burnham but better.

“There is huge competition for places now, the defence is much stronger and they are playing better as a unit.”
