The Puritans beat Cirencester Town 2-1 in Saturday’s Evo-Stik Southern League clash with goals in each half from Luke Carnell and substitute Conor McDonagh. But the Puritans were not at their best in picking up three more premier division points.

Ford said: “We’ve got three more points and we’re keeping the pressure on the teams above us. We won the game but we’ve got to be better than that against Chesham.

“We did just enough in the first half and got the goal. We had a period when we were in control and passed the ball well but we didn’t really give the supporters anything to cheer.

“I don’t want too many more games like that and it will be a different one against Chesham because they will be better than Cirencester. So we will have to improve and I know my players will look after the ball better on Tuesday.

“We got the second goal but Jack Self hit the post and Ricky Johnson missed a glorious chance. That would have been enough but not taking those two chances seemed to affect us and impact on the players.

“Jack Harding made up for his error with a great save but apart from that - and a few balls in and around the box which can go either way - we looked quite comfortable.

“Alan and Charlie Griffin’s experience helped Cirencester put some pressure on late in the game and that’s why I dropped Ricky [Johnson] back into defence. I didn’t want us to end up drawing the game.”
