Second half goals from Charlie Wise, his first for the club, and substitute Felipe Barcelos earned United all three Division One South & West points at Wantage.

That took Mike Ford’s side back to the top, a point ahead of Cinderford Town, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Shortwood United.

Ford said: “Before the game I asked the players if we can we make the Taunton game a huge one. To do so we’ve got to win four games on the run and we’ve ticked one of those off the list at Wantage.

“It might be a case of sacrificing the performance for the result at this stage of the season. We had plenty of chances, including a missed penalty, but got the goals at the right times.

“All credit to Wantage, it was a derby and they acquitted themselves well but the pitch was a great leveller. It’s just things you have to overcome to be successful.

“The ball kept dropping in and around their six-yard box in the first half and it kept falling to them. Our finishing has cost us lately, it cost us two points against Tiverton as well their keeper’s display.”
