Diggin double breaks Saints' duck on the road

Steve Diggin bagged both goals as Saints won 2-1 in Saturday’s clash to earn Kevin Wilkin’s side their first victory away from home and what a vital one it could prove to be in the fight to stay up. The only fixture in the division to survive the heavy rain saw Saints move out of the relegation zone.

The Lambs started brightly with Paul Green being denied by Sam Hornby. At the other end Joe Clarke’s free-kick found Richard Batchelor whose header was saved by James Belshaw.

Clarke blazed over from 30 yards before Saints broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when David Moyo beat the offside trap and pulled the ball for Diggin to slide home at the far post.

After the restart substitute Leon Mettam headed straight at Hornby before Dan Preston was sent off for picking up a second caution.

Matty Lowe was thwarted by Belshaw before going close moments later when he couldn’t force the ball home in the six yard box. Hornby was quickly out to deny Mettam before Saints doubled their advantage in the 87th minute when Lowe pulled the ball back for Diggin to fire home.

Elliott Durrell reduced the arrears in stoppage-time, converting a spot-kick after Mettam was brought down in the penalty area. Deep into added-time Mettam’s 35 yard free-kick went over the bar and Saints had secured three valuable points.
