Diggin could be back to boost attack

It was initially eared that Saints’ top scorer would be out for six weeks with a fracture to his elbow but Diggin now hopes to be back in a couple of weeks.

That will be welcomed by boss Kevin Wilkin who could have lost another striker had David Moyo not escaped injury after a heavy challenge against Bradford Park Avenue. Keeper Jon Stewart clattered Moyo out after racing out of his are and was kucky to stay on, picking up just a booking.

Wilkin said: “It was a big decision to make only five minutes into the game but I think if the offence happened anywhere else on the pitch it would have been a straight red card.

“The keeper came off the floor with both feet and it was a reckless challenge, we’ve had players sent off this season for much less than that, which is frustrating.

I don’t want to lament that decision but David Moyo could have been seriously injured and we may have lost him as well as Steve [Diggin]. The keeper can count himself very lucky to have stayed on.”

Looking back on the game itself, Wilkin added: “Coming off the back of two away victories I was hoping we could win the game but Bradford made life difficult for us and there were 47 fouls throughout the game.

“They didn’t registered a worthwhile shot and we needed a little bit of magic to open them up and if we had gone ahead I think we could have gone on to win the game. But it’s something to build on, that’s the first time we’ve gone three games without losing.

“It was disappointing not to score in front of a big crowd but that’s seven points our of nine, it’s another clean sheet and now we go to Stalybridge.

“We have to maintain this form until the end of the season, if we do then I think we will be fine. But I know there are some big games to come.”
