Puritans boss Paul Davis saluted his players after they produced the type of performance he asked for against Redditch United.
Davis said: “I was slightly disappointed with our quality on the ball but a couple of weeks ago we were also off the pace against Burnham and lost but against Redditch we’ve picked up a point, that’s football.
“The pitches won’t be great over the next couple of months so we will need to produce more performances like that one. If you only have one side to your game you are not going to win many games.
“We made it difficult for Redditch to break us down and get behind us. We’ve got some nice young footballers here but sometimes you have to simply work hard in games.
“Since I’ve been here most of the goals we’ve conceded have come in the second half of games so we knew how important it was to keep it tight after the restart. I told the players if we don’t concede the least we will get from the game is a point and we did.”
Declan Hartigan’s performance in midfield personified United’s gritty display but he will miss the next three games through suspension.
Davis found it hard to single out individual players although he was full of praise for his side’s defensive qualities.
He added: “You could probably pick any player to be man-of-the match but Declan Hartigan had an excellent game and he forms a very good pairing with Carl Tappin as they do much work off the ball for us. Players like Declan and Carl are happy just closing the opposition down and winning possession.
“All across the back four we were excellent, especially Jacob Walcott who had to move to right back before the game to replace Luke Cray.
“Leigh Bedwell is back to somewhere near his best now, I expected him to make that save right at the end but it was the double save that earned us a point, he will gain us a few more this season.”
