Champelovier will fight to save Town

And the Daventry Town assistant-manager says he will do all he can to help keep the struggling club in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

Daventry take on Goole Town this weekend, having slipped to 19th in Division One South after their 12th defeat on the spin in Saturday’s six-pointer with Loughborough Dynamo.

Champelovier said: “With all the problems off the pitch, a transfer embargo, our budget being cut in half and seven key players leaving it would be easy to say I can’t wait for the season to end.

“But we have eight very important games to go and we need to ensure we don’t finish in those bottom two places.

“I certainly don’t want a relegation on my CV despite all the rubbish we’ve had to deal with and I know the gaffer doesn’t either.

“So with a nice run of games to the end, we need to see this season out properly and we will be doing everything we can with the resources we have to fight till the end and finish positively.”

Looking back on Saturday’s defeat, Champelovier added: “We started okay and actually went in the better team but we didn’t show the energy levels or work-rate needed during the second half.

“I thought we competed well against a very strong, physical side who I feel, with the side they’ve got now, are in a false position. It now makes next Saturday against Goole an even bigger game in terms of league position and relegation battle.

“Positives from the defeat were certainly the fact the new lads settled in nicely and it was another impressive performance from Jean Dakouri in the centre of midfield. On top of that it was a better performance than we had been showing.

“Ricky Hill has certainly been the mainstay of the team this year. He has been an ever-present, an integral part of the team and the reason we gave him the armband after Jason Lee left.

“He is a winner which we hope will rub off on some of the others.

“Ben Heath has made some fantastic saves and has huge potential but he’s been at fault for some goals we have conceded and he knows that.”
