Brilliant Puritans are the early leaders

Banbury United’s first-ever home game in the Vanarama National League North delivered a memorable result as they beat title favourites AFC Fylde 3-1.

And, having won at Curzon Ashton on the opening day, the victory at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium sent Andy Whing’s team to the top of the early standings.

King’s Lynn Town are the only other side with a 100 per cent record but United are just above them on goals scored.

The Puritans took an 11th-minute lead through Ben Radcliffe before the visitors equalised with a Nick Haughton penalty.

However, Banbury regained the lead before the break thanks to Alex Babos and they wrapped things up on 65 minutes when Jak Hickman struck.

Whing’s team will hope to make it three wins out of three when they entertain Boston United on Tuesday night.
