Brackley Town manager Jon Brady heaped praise on Will Green after the young striker’s fourth goal in five games helped his side to a 2-1 victory in Saturday’s Vanarama Conference North derby with Leamington.
Saints emerged 2-1 victors at St James Park to leapfrog Brakes and climb four places up the table. Northampton Town’s on-loan striker David Moyo bagged the other goal on his debut before Lee Moore pulled a goal back late on.
Moyo had an early chance but was thwarted by keeper Ross Atkins on his debut before Green gave Saints the lead with a 22nd minute header from Eddie Odhiambo’s cross.
Only excellent defending by Dwayne Samuels saved the day from Stefan Moore’s cross before Jack Edwards headed over from the resulting corner before halftime.
Green twice threatened to extend the lead after the break and Moyo went close before Stefan Moore saw his header well saved by Dean Snedker when the experienced striker might have expected better.
Moyo scored a fine second goal in the 66th minute, Ryan Rowe’s cross-field pass picked out Samuels whose deep cross was headed into the net by Moyo via the bar.
Saints appeared to be cruising before Lee Moore grabbed fired home with nine minutes remaining as defenders failed to clear their lines.
Brakes put Saints under some late pressure but Brady’s boys were not to be denied three precious points in the fight at the wrong end of the table.
Brady said: “I am pleased for Will [Green]. He has everything it takes to become a top player, he has been given his chance and he is taking it.”
