Battling collapse ends Banbury’s fading title hopes

Banbury’s fading Home Counties Premier Cricket League title hopes were finally extinguished in Saturday’s heavy defeat at Reading.

Luke Ryan’s side lost by a massive 147 runs in the division one fixture following a batting collapse while leaders High Wycombe and Henley both won.

The Banbury captain inserted Reading and found early success as openers Sanjit Jheeta and Sukhmeet Kang were soon heading back to the pavilion. But Martin Andersson hit an unbeaten 90, ably backed by Praful Waghela 40 and Andrew Rishton 59 as Reading posted 233-8 despite Ollie Wright taking 3-29.

In reply, Banbury’s top order again struggled as they soon slipped behind the run rate with Lloyd Sabin and Ed Phillips failing to make double figures. Opener Hugo Darby 17, Richard West 19 and Will Briggs 14 were the only batsmen to make an impression as Banbury were dismissed for only 86 runs in the 32nd over as Khalid Malik took an impressive 4-17.
